Celtic Art

Featured image: The Whole World

Before I left for our southwest trip I was researching the Celtic art. Especially their knots. The symbolism within the Celtic knot is that all things are interconnected, women together. That means the good as well as the bad are woven into the knot. I wonder, if all things are intertwined, what was the thing that held the know together? I came up with the conclusion that it was faith.

Faith according to the online dictionary is: complete trust or confidence in someone or something. Faith is also, according to the online dictionary, a strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof. Faith isn’t really a visual. It is just something to believe in and this belief allows us to imagine and create work that illustrates it; like the Celtic know.

This is a Good Day to Imagine

 Featured image: Gram's Vase

Imagining is a major part of who I am and how I think. I used to be pretty clear on what was real and what I made up, but with everything going on in the world, none of that seems to matter. So there are things I do because they are right and they make sense to me, be that they are imagined or real. It seems right to me that experience is the real reason I create art. I figured out a long time ago that what I think and what I wanted to create were two different things. Both are very powerful. I just don’t let them fight anymore. I don’t fight the paint and the mark making anymore when things don’t turn out the way that I expected. I just imagine them differently. Abstract work allows not only the artist but also the viewer to engage in the work and to imagine, to create.

Each day I just go to my studio, turn on the lights and immerse myself and my life to the beautiful mystery of creating and imagining.

When I finish a day in my studio I say to myself as I turn out the studio lights, “this was a good day to imagine.”

“Imagination is more important than knowledge.” (Albert Einstein)

White Feather

 Featured image: White Feather

Each morning my life becomes transformed and I awake to mother nature once again becoming new. If anyone wonders what new and authentic, and one-of-a-kind is, watch the day begin. Watch the sun rise.

I watched this morning as a tiny white feather floated from nowhere down to the earth. It was so small, once a part of flight and living, now to become once again part of the miracle of earth, nature and creation.

Natural things like this one are hard to recreate for an artist. For me, it is the idea of receiving a gift such as a floating feather and sharing it with others, one way or another.

Trusting Nature

  Featured image: Nature's Truth

Freedom in the Middle Space is like meadows filled with wildflowers.

Meadows filled with an overflow of different kinds of flowers intermixing is nature’s way of being very creative.  As I pass the wildflower meadows where I take my walks, I see bright magnificent colors of intermingled deep blue greens, yellow greens and whites.

I trust nature, like I trust those in the middle who honor and respect choice and the individual.  I trust nature, the natural space of the earth, water and trees, bugs, birds and critters.  I trust nature with its wind, rain and snow. I trust the natural space of sunrises and sunsets along with the natural space of a field of wildflowers.  For me, nature, the natural, is all about creation, It is something that is part of me and I am a part of it.  For me, it is part of the large and the small, the positive and the negative, life and death.

I looked up the word nature.  Its meaning comes, of course, from Latin, meaning “natura.”  Natura, dawn of life, to be born, creation.  No wonder I trust nature.
