The Earth Has Always Grounded and Inspired My Art

Featured image: Telling the Story

The earth has always grounded and inspired my art. I use stories and images from nature to bring symbols from past cultures into the present. These symbols help me make sense of life’s unpredictable journey.

My current work explores the strength of the individual spirit. It looks at how nature’s calming and restorative power nurtures our talents and helps us persevere through challenges. I call moments of overcoming adversity the “yes, yes, yeses” of my life. For me, they celebrate the strength of the human spirit, especially the strength of each individual.

My challenge is to express that strength in my art. I use imaginary and symbolic figures, places, and landscapes to create myths, fables, and stories with deeper meanings. These give my imagination a visible form.

Working with symbols, imagination, and ideas offers creative challenges and rich ways to express what I want to say.

Hawks

Featured image: Hawk III As with most things, there are many ways to see and understand them; the hawk is no different. Hawks are beautiful birds—their plumage is always filled with a variety of feathers and colors: dots, stripes, reds, and browns. The hawk is known as a predatory bird because of the shape of its beak and talons, which is what I find fascinating about birds of prey. Those two features make the bird powerful, strong, and magnificent—something to contend with—which I emphasized in my work “Hawk.” The hawk has quite a history of symbolism across many cultures. Some common themes include courage, resilience, independence, and authority. They inspire humans to seize control of their destiny and rise above challenges. They are also seen as messengers from the spirit world. In some cultural stories, hawks serve as enforcers of the divine will.

Warbler's Song

Image
Featured work: Yellow Bird At this moment, this very moment, I wish I could be a tiny warbler and answer the call of a male warbler singing his heart out. Calling, calling for a mate. His song is so glorious and pure on this sunny morning. Now I hear another. Glorious morning. In the weavings I am currently doing, I hope I am showing that everything is connected. Everything is like a weaving, whether tightly woven or loosely woven. The papers are woven together one way or another. Adornments are added, stories are told as I work. Things are connected, like the warblers, their song, and me this morning. Glorious morning.
